50 Years of Faith, Grace and Thanksgiving

KARAKOL, A CELEBRATION OF FAITH, GRACE, AND THANKSGIVING

Karakol is more than a century old tradition and a much-awaited Christian event. It connects with the celebration of fiestas in the province of Cavite. Karakol came from the Spanish word Caracol, which means snail. Thus, this famous dance procession is called karakul because of its slow and rhythmic movement, like a snail, done in the spirit of joy, devotion, and unity.
In lowland Cavite, which is along the shores of Manila Bay, the karakul goes from the Church towards the shore where the image is boarded on a fishing boat (basing). The boat, bearing the image, sails asking the patron saint to bless the sea. Other fishing boats that sail along it are well-decorated, filled with food, and boarded with devotees and brass bands playing. When this fluvial procession reaches the shores, the karakul continues along the streets and returns to the Parish Church. Thousands of people usually participate in this event, which usually lasts a whole day. Most of them dance the karakul to express their gratitude to God for favors received through the intercession of the patron saint. Some join the dance procession to ask for particular favors.
The karakul reminisces David’s dance when he welcomed the Ark of the Covenant as it approached the Holy City of Jerusalem. (cf.2Sam 6:5, 14) David could not contain his joy that he danced around the ark until it reached the gates of Jerusalem. Likewise, the karakul is the present way of praising God as the Book of Psalm admonishes us: “Let them dance in praise of His name” (Ps 149:3); and “Praise Him with drums and dancing!” (150:3-6).
On the occasion of the golden jubilee establishment of the Diocese of Imus on November 25, 2011, the Catholic Church of Cavite has undergone the three thematic emphases in preparation for the celebration. These are…
  • Ka-hapong kay yaman
  • Ra-dikal na pagsunod kay Kristo
  • Kol-ektibong Pagkilos
It is in the spirit of gratitude, love, and faith that the Diocese of Imus shares this event to all who become part of the journey. Tena, tayo ay mag-KARAKOL.
